Allegheny Class of '66

Sam and Judy Selvage McCain

Sam and I got married five days after graduating from Allegheny.  We started our married life living in Cleveland where Sam worked for then J & L Steel.  I taught biology for two years and then we started having our family.  Sam spent his entire working career with the steel company that merged and changed names several times.  We lived in several locations including Cleveland, Youngstown, Pittsburgh and Chicago.  We finally settled in Avon Lake, a lovely community west of Cleveland, where we have lived since 1984..

We have three children, Lauren, Ken, and Dan.  Dan, our youngest surprised us and decided to go to Allegheny because of the strong science program.  He also met his wife at Allegheny.

After we moved to Avon Lake, I was offered a position teaching High School Biology and Chemistry, which I did for 25 years.  I truly found a career that I loved.  My strong background in science and liberal arts helped me to be successful in my job.

Since retirement, we like to spend time with family as much as we can.  We have four grandchildren, two live here in Avon Lake so we see them quite often.  Our other grandchildren  live in Virginia, so we don’t see them as much as we would like. Our daughter lives in Denver.  We love to spend time walking outdoors and playing golf together, and volunteering in the community.

Both Sam and I earned Masters degrees. The strong academic background we received while at Allegheny helped so much in achieving these degrees. We learned how to think and how to write effectively, skills we both needed in our careers.  The liberal arts topics that we covered at Allegheny helped us to be truly educated.  Another very important aspect of our time at Allegheny was that we met so many wonderful people and formed enduring friendships.
